Unveiling the Unfamiliar Roots: iGENEA DNA Journey of the Coleman Lineage

Family name Coleman

DNA testing with iGENEA unravels an unexpectedly diverse ancestry in the Coleman family. While Irish roots are expected, findings reveal exciting Viking ancestry and unexpected ties to an Indigenous group in Canada.

Following my curiosity about my lineage, I registered for a DNA test with iGENEA. The insights from this genealogical journey turned my previous understanding of my roots upside down, particularly regarding the Coleman branch of my family tree. I had always believed that the Colemans traced back solely to Ireland, given their strong cultural ties to the country. However, the results from iGENEA not only unveiled a broader geographic origin but also a compelling history that has profoundly reshaped my identity.

My test revealed a combination of our DNA with notable traces from the Nordic region. This unexpected piece of information nudged me to delve into the documentation and excavation of the Vikings' exploration paths. Defying my previous presumptions, it turned out the Vikings had a substantial presence in Ireland during the 8th to 11th century, a period known as the Viking Age. Consequently, this Nordic connection prompted me to re-examine the Colemans' history.

I have always felt an inexplicable affinity towards seafaring, bolstered by picturesquely embellished chronicles of Coleman ancestors known as far-ranging fishermen. The uncovered genetic affinity with the Viking ancestry, renowned as fearless seafarers, kindled a sense of clarity and ownership over this innate maritime fascination. It also shed light on the robust resilience and adventurous spirit that echoes through generations of Colemans.

Beyond the Viking revelation, the DNA results displayed an unexpected connection with an Indigenous group in Canada. Intrigued, I found that the Colemans, in their trans-Atlantic explorations, interacted and integrated with Indigenous groups throughout the 17th century. This new perspective infused me with a profound respect and acknowledgment for the indigenous lineage intertwined within my roots, propelling a desire to learn and respect their culture and struggles.

The DNA test at iGENEA has drastically reshaped my perspective about my heritage. The unexpected revelations have imbued my identity with a deeper understanding and richer appreciation for my diverse roots, enriching me with a more comprehensive perception of who I am.
